Alert: Disreputable Holliston puppy seller emerges in NY

Puppies die weeks after going home

An organization previously shut down by Massachusetts officials for selling sick puppies has reemerged out of state, where more unsuspecting families are finding their new puppies in dire health.

Pawsafe Animal Rescue first ran into trouble in Massachusetts more than a decade ago after several puppies they sold in Milford and Holliston died. At the time, Pawsafe was supplying puppies to Holliston Meadows Pet Resort. The problems led the Mass Department of Agricultural Resources to order Pawsafe to stop selling, transferring, or importing dogs.

This didn’t stop Pawsafe, however. The group became registered as a charity in New York, and began showing puppies at events like adoption fairs in Carmel, NY. The state’s consumer protection agency then began receiving complaints about puppies who became critically ill shortly after leaving Pawsafe.

Sugar is just one of those dogs. In August 2017, Sugar suffered a painful death weeks after she went home, as did two of her siblings. It has been reported that Pawsafe did not reimburse the families for the thousands of dollars incurred in medical bills trying to save the young dogs.

If you have concerns about the health of an animal received from Pawsafe Animal Rescue, it is advisable to contact the New York Department of Agriculture.
