Driver, Thought Dead, Was Resuscitated by Emergency Personnel

The driver of a rolled-over tractor trailer was thought to be dead on scene, but was able to be transported to the hospital with "severe injuries."

Submitted by the State Police:

westbound in Hopkinton. Preliminary investigation indicates that, for reasons still under investigation, the tractor-trailer rolled over on the ramp. The crash caused extensive damage to the cab, causing entrapment of and severe injuries to the operator.

Hopkinton Fire and Rescue extricated the operator, Feliz Piedade, 59, of East Providence, R.I., and rushed him to UMass Medical Center in Worcester. Piedade eventually succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

Piedade was initially thought to be deceased onscene but was given life-saving measures by Hopkinton Fire and Rescue that kept him alive long enough to reach the hospital. We apologize for any confusion from our earlier releases.

Route 90 westbound at interchange 11A was closed for several hours to allow for rescue operations, gathering of evidence and the clearing of the roadway of the truck and debris. Traffic was significantly impacted due to the lane closures. The ramps were reopened by 3:45 p.m. and the truck fully removed by 8 p.m.

The crash is being investigated by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police. Troopers were assisted by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Photo, troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and Hopkinton Fire and Rescue.
