Fiery Crash In Shrewsbury Ends With Intoxication And Gun Charges

Two men have been placed under arrest after a serious crash at the intersection of Route 9 and Quinsigamond Avenue in Shrewsbury.

SHREWSBURY, MA — The Shrewsbury Police Department responded to the scene of a serious crash where an SUV was flipped on its roof and in flames early Monday morning.

The officers found a gray 2017 Chevy Equinox flipped over and on fire in the middle of the intersection, and a black 2015 Lexus RC350 with massive damage in the parking lot of a Burger King nearby.

The Shrewsbury Fire Department was able to rescue the single driver of the Chevy Equinox, who was taken to a nearby hospital suffering serious injuries from the crash.

Shrewsbury Police Officers then located two handguns, a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson and a .380-caliber Glock inside the Lexus.

Police say five people were inside the Lexus during the crash but were able to escape with only minor injuries.

Leosol Vargas, 23, of Hopkinton, was charged with: OUI liquor resulting in serious bodily injury, operating to endanger, drinking alcohol from an open container in a motor vehicle, and possession of narcotics.

Benjamin Peterson, 22, of West Boylston, was charged with: obstruction of justice, two counts of illegal storage of a firearm, and two counts of an intoxicated licensee carrying a firearm.

This investigation remains under investigation by Shrewsbury Police.
