Holliston Choir Looking for New Local Singers

Exsultet is recruiting new members for their ensemble, which is based in Holliston.

When people think of a chorus, they might think of classical music, but Richard Larraga, artistic director for Exsultet, wants to change that with the now-forming artistic ensemble.

Larraga and others are actively recruiting new members to join their thirty-person choir, and they want anyone with a passion for singing.

"We really want to be a group of serious amateur singers."

Larraga is working with the chorus director at Holliston High School to bring in talented students from in town and surrounding towns to expand the diversity of the group.

But the group just isn't about music. Part of the performances will include spoken word actors to link the music together to help make the evening a story to keep listeners engaged.

"One time we had a group of painters with us during the concert and we raffled off the paintings at the end of the night," Larraga said. "It really made for a unique experience."

Exsultet means "to rejoice" according to Larraga and that's exactly what he wants members of the choir to do.

"I think it's important that sing because it builds community, it's an aerobic exercise and it gives you a sense of accomplishment," he said.

There are currently 12 members interested in the group, but Larraga said they want to have 30 members before their first concert on Nov. 16 at the First Congregational Church.

They will be holding open rehearsals at the end of August as well as four "summer sings" in July and early August.
