MetroWest Kids Having the #BestSummerEver
Programming keeps kids moving, exploring, learning, and achieving all summer long.
Summer is the ideal time to get up, get out, and explore; and that’s exactly what the kids at the MetroWest YMCA Summer Day Camp are doing.
When you come to theFamily Outdoor Center in Hopkinton you will see campers from 3 to 16 years old enjoying their summer days and participating in traditional camp activities like boating, fishing, shooting archery, and learning to swim. However, the camp has also expanded its offering and with a new Teaching Kitchen, offering cooking lessons, and using vegetables right from the garden on the property.
“We were fortunate to receive funding from TJX Companies, Inc. to build our Teaching Kitchen and now can offer classes to kids and are looking to expand to families in different seasons. Also, using materials donated by the Framingham Rotary Club, an amazing group of volunteers from MathWorks, built and planted our Learning Gardens, said Scott Umbel, Executive Director, FOC. From picking vegetables to making salsa, kids get to create and sample their own ‘farm to table’ recipes here at camp.”

To encourage campers to participate in new activities, the camp includes a Summer Achievement Program curriculum. This helps engage campers in new and exciting activities that they might not have ever tried before. Their efforts earn beads and ribbons for their camp nametag necklaces... something they wear with pride.
“The Summer Achievement Program is something we started last year and the kids loved it so much, we brought it back for a second year; it really sets our camps apart from the others” said Umbel.
