B.A.A. Half-Marathon Draws 9K Runners: Who Won

If you were in JP or near the Emerald Necklace Sunday, you weren't imagining things. There were a lot of runners out.

BOSTON — Some 9,000 runners wound their way out of Franklin Park and down through the Emerald Necklace as part in this year’s B.A.A. Half Marathon.

The 13.1 mile race had traffic shut down in JP for four hours as runners of all abilities challenged themselves to one of the Boston Athletic Association's annual main events, Sunday.

Daniel Chebii of Kenya won the race with a time of 1:03:08. He beat three time champion Daniel Salel also of Kenya's time of 1:04:31 from last year. Joan Chelimo, from Kenya, came in first for the second year in a row, this year with a time of 1:09:34. She beat her time from last year by more than a minute.

Both earned them a flower garland a trophy and the first place overall prize? $10,000.

Of the top finishers in the men's and women's categories, there was also a local face.

Brian Shrader, of Brookline ran the race in 1:05:26 putting him in 8th place for the men. Out of the top 10 finishers in the men's division he was one of only three Americans.

A portion of the entry fees are donated to the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, a non-profit organization working to restore, preserve, maintain and promote this historic park system, according to the B.A.A.
