City Seeks Proposals for Hyde Square Public Art Project

It would be installed in Fall 2017, as part of the streets' larger reconstruction project.

The city said Tuesday it's seeking proposals from artists and residents for a public art project in Hyde Square.

Whichever proposal gets selected will be installed along with the Hyde Square intersection reconstruction in Fall 2017, where Centre, Perkins, and Day Street meet.

It's part of the larger reconstruction project, which includes widening sidewalks, new lighting, and landscaping. A major goal, according to the city, "is to create a sense of place and enhance the public realm with artwork, which is what this request for proposal seeks to accomplish."

The joint venture comes from the city's Public Works Department, the Boston Art Commission (part of the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture), the Hyde Square Task Force, Hyde Jackson Square Main Street and local residents.

In a statement through his office, the mayor said of the project:

"The Hyde Square public art RFP is a great opportunity for local artists and residents to share their creative vision for this dynamic area of Jamaica Plain, and we encourage all qualified residents to apply. As we continue to invest in public art across the city, we look forward to engaging the community in opportunities that embrace the diversity of people and cultures that make up each Boston neighborhood."

The city's arts and culture chief, Julie Burros, said the city looks forward to a project that "embraces the values defined by the neighborhood while encouraging social engagement."
