Hundreds Celebrate with "National Night Out" in Jamaica Plain

National Night Out Entertains Hundreds in Jamaica Plain

Annual Celebration of Police-Community Partnerships drew a large crowd to the South St. Apartments, for a night of food and fun on Monday, August 5th.

With many thanks to lots of support, from many community partners, the Boston Police Department hosted the annual, “National Night Out”, in Jamaica Plain on last Monday. Hundreds of friends, supporters and elected officials gathered on Metcalf Court in the South Street Apartments for an evening of food, music, awards, entertainers, games, demonstrations, education, comradery and more.

Four local neighbors were awarded for their selfless contributions to their community. Ms. Wendy Polanco of the Mildred Hailey Tenants’ Task Force was awarded by Mayor Walsh as the Boston Crime Fighter of the Year for her constant efforts to improve the lives of her neighbors. Mr. Francisco Fernandez was awarded by Councilor Matt O’Malley, for his Community Service to the South St. neighborhood through his hard work at the Happy Market. Mr. Carlos “Hooper” Roche was recognized by District Attorney Rachael Rollins, for his mentoring and leadership at the South St. Youth Center. Ms. Minerva Gomez was also thanked by State Representative Liz Malia for her dedication, skills and education in the areas of fine cooking and nutrition at the South St. Apartments, especially with the children. Rep. Malia also recognized several student residents at the South Street Apartments, who all graduated from local high schools this past spring.

All of the fun and celebrations were made possible through the generous support of many local neighbors & businesses. Some of these big-hearted supporters included: The South Street Apartments Tenants’ Task Force, the Boston Housing Authority, The South Street Youth Center, Tree of Life-Arbol de Vida, JP Centre-South Main Street, Happy Market & Spirits, Mildred Hailey Tenants Organization, Egleston Square Main Street, CVS Pharmacy, 7-11 (Seven Eleven) Stores, Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council, Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation, Ferris Wheels, Commonwealth Bank, Boston Water & Sewer Water Truck, Boston College Youth Police Academy, and more. The officers, neighbors and businesses of BPD District E-13 offer our great appreciation to our wonderful partners, volunteers and guests, who all made possible this fun, family celebration of local Police-Community cooperation.
