“In 1842 this church sent a letter to the Baptist Mission Society saying slavery was unacceptable,” Wiest-Laird, the church’s pastor, told the Boston Globe. “Black lives mattered then and black lives matter now.”

The sign was ripped down in September and then again in early October. The new sign was placed well out of the reach of troublemakers. It now hangs above the church’s entrance as opposed to the front lawn.

Members of the church’s community are passionate about the nationwide grass-roots movement, known as “Black Lives Matter.” The movement aims to shine light on the police-involved deaths of unarmed black people.

Im smaller print, the sign also reads: “Of course all lives matter . . . God loves each and everyone . . . however, given the continuing injustice and violence in our society that is disproportionately faced by people of color we must proclaim Black Lives Matter.”
