The species - named "Tuber arnoldianum" - was discovered after researchers looked into truffle colonization at the arboretum.

Jamaica Plain, MA – A new truffle species unknown to science has emerged at Arnold Arboretum.
The Jamaica Plain News first reported that the species was discovered by Rosanne Healy, a 2013 recipient of the Arnold Arboretum Sargent Award, and her colleagues.
The researchers began looking at truffle colonization on the grounds after the European species Tuber borchii was found at the base of a native red oak.
