Obituary: Edward J. O'Connell, Marine Corps Veteran, Born in Jamaica Plain

He was the longtime companion of Louise Appel of Stoughton.

Edward J., O’Connell, 82, was a 46-year resident of Norwood. He passed on Friday, February 27, 2015. Born in Jamaica Plain on August 13, 1932, Edward was the son of the late Martin and Mary (Hall) O’Connell. Edward served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He held a B.A. from Boston College and an M.A. from Northeastern University. He was a guidance counselor at Stoughton Junior High School for many years prior to his retirement. Edward was the loving father of Michael O’Connell of Newport, RI, Maureen and Kevin Hines, Claire O’Connell, all of Norwood, Richard and Debra O’Connell of Newton, NH, Marie and Peter Foley of Norwood and the late Theresa O’Connell ; the cherished grandfather of Sean, Tara, Madison, Megan, Kevin, Shana, Gavin, Vivian and Jack; the dear brother of Roseanna Grassini of Hyannisport, and the late Michael O’Connell and Mary McShane; the longtime companion of Louise Appel of Stoughton; former husband of Ellen (Kelly) O’Connell of Wrentham; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 3, at 9 a.m. at the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St. in Norwood followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Timothy Church in Norwood. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, March 2, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Edward’s memory to the American Cancer Society, on 30 Speen St. in Framingham or via www.cancer.org
