Shooting In JP Leaves One Man Dead Near Jackson Square

This is the third shooting in two weeks near Jackson Square. But, at least until Nov. 18, crime was down overall in Boston.

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Thursday morning near Jackson Square, the third shooting in the area in the past two weeks, and the 50th homicide in Boston this year, according to a tally of news reports.

Just before 1:15 a.m. Thursday police were called to Chestnut Avenue and Hoffman Street, for reports of shots fired.

They found a man with life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to police.

The incident marks the third fatal shooting in the few blocks radius of JP in a little more than a week. A man and a woman were shot Nov. 19 in the Mildred C. Hailey Apartments, formerly known as Bromley Heath. Although the man who was pronounced dead on the scene has not yet been publically identified, police identified the woman as Lodimira Dos-Santos, 23. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was the 49th homicide this year, according to a tally by the Boston Globe.

Two days before that police got into a struggle with a young man with a gun and his mother who they said joined the struggle in the area.

Before that, on Nov. 13 police were called to Jackson Square for a report of a young woman shot.

Between Jan. 1 and Nov. 18 there were 42 fatal shootings in Boston, five more this year than the same time last year, according to police data. Still, overall, shootings are down this period compared with last year.

That number of fatalities has edged up in the days since, between subsequent shootings and a number of people who were seriously injured took a turn for the worse.

Police data indicates overall, reported crime is down 4 percent this year compared with last.
