Watch: Preggers Gorilla Gets an Ultrasound Scan

Kiki, who is expecting her fourth baby, held her belly up so the veterinarians could conduct the scan.

A female western lowland gorilla at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston will likely have an extra special Mother’s Day this year.

The zoo’s staff announced earlier this week that Kiki, one of seven of her kind at the zoo, is pregnant with her fourth baby.

Her pregnancy was confirmed through an over-the-counter home pregnancy test, the same tests humans use. It is predicted that Kiki, who last gave birth in 2010, will deliver her new offspring sometime in May.

The gorilla has been closely monitored by the animal management and veterinary staffs. The teams were recently able to obtain ultrasound images of the baby thanks to Kiki’s cooperation. Throughout the examination, she reportedly held her belly up to the mesh while zookeepers and vets conducted the scan. The pregnancy is the result of a breeding by the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is designed to maintain demographically stable captive populations of species.

Kiki resides in the Franklin Park Zoo’s Tropical Forest Pavilion with her daughters Kimani and Kambiri. Kira, Kiki’s oldest daughter, moved to the Philadelphia Zoo in 2013. Kitombe, father of the soon-to-be newborn, also raised Kiki’s other daughters.
