First All-Electric Vehicles Added To Lexington’s Municipal Fleet

The Department's leadership in acquiring the EV is an important step towards further electrification of the Town's vehicle inventory.

November 25, 2020

We are excited to announce the arrival of two all-Electric Vehicles (EV) to the Town’s municipal fleet. These are the first all-electric vehicles to be added to the Town’s inventory. These vehicles, as well as a charging station, will be paid for in-part through grant funding under the Massachusetts Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (MassEVIP)--a grant program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

Our Department of Public Facilities had two vehicles due for replacement, presenting an opportunity to replace them with vehicles that would reduce the Town’s carbon footprint. The Department’s leadership in acquiring the EV is an important step towards further electrification of the Town’s vehicle inventory.

“We’re excited to be taking this important step towards reaching the Town’s net zero energy goals,” said Sustainability Director Stella Carr. “Support from grant programs like MassEVIP make it possible for municipalities to make the switch to cleaner-energy vehicles. We’re looking forward to powering change, one vehicle at a time,” she added.

Transportation makes up 22% of our community’s Greenhous Gas (GHG) emissions. Switching from gas-powered to electric vehicles reduces vehicle emissions and is in line with the Town’s sustainability goals.

Both vehicles are 2020 Nissan LEAFs, and represent the beginning of the Town’s plans for expanding the number of all-electric vehicles in the municipal fleet. Our Sustainability Director will be identifying additional grant opportunities, researching emerging trends in municipal fleets, and creating a plan to replace our fleet’s less-efficient vehicles with EVs.
