LEXINGTON — Team Minuteman from Minuteman High School made a strong showing at the 24th Annual Genesis Battlegreen 10k and 5k Run / Walk at Lexington High School in November, placing fourth in the 5K. The team raised $2,965, with $1,500 going to the Minuteman Parent Association, $465 for the Minuteman Futures Foundation, and $1,000 for the Pauline Briggs Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Minuteman student.
Team Minuteman’s three top runners were senior Otto Rademacher, Principal George Clement and parent Benner Ih. Rademacher, who ran in this race for the third year in a row, beat Principal Clement’s time by four seconds and has been invited to join him in Minuteman’s student-run restaurant for lunch. Clement placed first in his age category.

In addition to the funds donated from Team Minuteman, the Battlegreen Run Foundation donates additional money to the Minuteman Parent Association and the Minuteman Futures Foundation. These donations are based on the number of runners and walkers registered under Team Minuteman.
The Battlegreen Run Foundation organizes this annual road race. Proceeds are donated to
local organizations including Minuteman High School, as well as, for example, Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston, the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Genesis Community Fund. The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3.
At the event, Minuteman Health Assisting students worked at the medical tent while Culinary Arts and Hospitality students prepared and served a signature dish of vegetarian chili and corn bread. Students in Design and Visual Communications worked on the event flyers, social media posts, raffle poster and lawn signs and Art Instructor Erin Bordeau was among those who did face painting. Freshman parents and students were among the largest Minuteman volunteer group.
“Minuteman had a robust presence at the Battlegreen Run, and it’s really wonderful to see our students becoming civic-minded members of our community,” said Maryanne Ham, Minuteman’s director of special projects who also serves on the board of directors for the Battlegreen Run Foundation.
Culinary Arts/Hospitality Instructor Anita Currier said, "It’s important to maintain the partnership with the Battlegreen Run organization. This was the third year that we attended. The student volunteers enjoyed the experience and the event provided a meaningful example of community service. The runners appreciated our signature offering of vegetarian chili. We are happy to know that our efforts facilitated a substantial contribution from the Battlegreen Run to the Minuteman Futures Foundation and the Minuteman Parent Association."
The new, $144.9 million Minuteman High School, which opened in September 2019, has been designed to support a robust college and career academy model. The academy model was adopted by staff and administration to create smaller “schools within a school” thereby promoting more personalized learning founded upon close relationships between students and teachers. The Minuteman college and career academy model integrates rigorous academics with relevant technical programming in occupational areas providing individual economic opportunity.
The new facility will accommodate project-based learning across disciplines, requiring students to learn how to work on a diverse team, solve problems and think critically. These are essential 21st-century skills that students practice and apply in a variety of school- and work-based environments.
As an accredited member of the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC), Minuteman inspires all students to attain their full potential, accelerate their learning, and become purposeful citizens in the global community.
