Malden Cohousing Community Breaks Ground
Work has begun on a 30-unit complex on Pleasant St. that blends private living spaces and common spaces to encourage interaction.
MALDEN, MA — Workers recently broke ground on a 30-unit condominium complex on Pleasant Street. The complex, located near Malden Square, will serve as a cohousing community, a concept that blends private living spaces and common spaces in order to encourage interaction.
According to Bay State Commons, the group behind the project, the complex will have expanded common spaces to include shared music and art rooms, children's indoor and outdoor play areas, a workshop, exercise room and a "great room," where meetings, social events and hangouts will take place. There will also be a large kitchen to provide food for group brunches, potlucks and dinners.
Bay State Commons worked as its own developer, hiring architects French/2D and Neshamkin French to design a three-story building with 30 studio-to-three bedroom units. There are currently about 130 cohousing communities in the United States and another 100 under construction, the group said.
