6 Displaced, 1 Injured After 2-Alarm Fire on Highland Avenue in Mansfield

Two adults and four children have been displaced and one person was injured after an early morning 2-alarm house fire on Highland Ave. in Mansfield.

According to Lt. John Terry of the Mansfield Fire Department, the cause of the fire is under investigation but is believed to have started from candles that were lit in a bedroom due to a power outage in the neighborhood.

“Just prior to the fire they had a car snap a pole in half on [Copeland Street]. That area of town lost power and I guess they were trying to illuminate the area with candles,” Terry said.

One of the adults in the two-family home, a female, injured her ankle during the commotion from the fire. She was transported to Norwood Hospital and has since been released. Terry said her injuries were non-life threatening.

The six occupants of the 27 Highland Ave. house are now displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Terry said the fire began in an upstairs bedroom and spread out to a hallway. He said the second floor would have to be "gutted" and that the first floor remained largely intact.

"Smoke and heat damage. A lot of stuff melted. All the walls are covered in soot," Terry said.

Emergency responders from North Attleboro, Sharon, Foxborough and Norton all assisted in putting out the blaze.

The call came in to the department at about 4:40 a.m.
