Chocolate Factory Renovation Takes Step Forward

The developer obtained a permit for construction late last year.

MANSFIELD, MA — The Chocolate Factory renovation took a step forward late last year.

Building Inspector Robert Blackman told the Sun Chronicle that Chocolate Factory LP took out a building permit around the end of the year. The permit for the $23.4 million project was filed on Dec. 26.

Work on turning the former factory into a building with 130 apartments and commercial space has been sluggish, with no on site-work taking place, despite a scheduled start set last year.

The factory closed in 2011 and has been the target of redevelopment. Previous plans with a focus only on residential development have been rejected.

The Chocolate Factory is located on Oakland Street and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, meaning that the exterior of the building must be preserved during the renovation.
