MHS Entrepreneurs Make Donation to "Prayers for Eddy" Campaign

Students ran a successful small business to raise money for their classmate.

The Mansfield High School entrepreneurship students successfully ran a small business selling various homemade items during the spring semester. To learn about the process of starting and maintaining a business, students created their own ceramic magnets, soy candles, wristlet keychains, and stamped necklaces. They marketed and sold their items at the Mansfield Art Show and in person. After analyzing their finances, they donated their proceeds of $850 to the "Prayers for Eddy" GoFundMe campaign in support of their classmate. Students also made $150 in microloans on Kiva.org to aspiring entrepreneurs in Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, and Nigeria.

Since the inception of this "small business" project, students have donated over $9,250 to local causes and funded microloans to aspiring entrepreneurs in 18 countries. The project was originally generated from a grant awarded by the Mansfield Education Foundation to increase classroom innovation and authentic learning experiences for students. Students have since received additional funding from an Edcamp Impact Grant, the Horace Mann Educators Corporation, Google, and NextGen Personal Finance to help increase their project reach.

A small inventory of items are still available for purchase. Additional product images can be seen in the sales flyer from the Mansfield Art Show. Please contact Jacqueline Prester for more information.
