Rt. 106 Speeding Program Cut Short

Traffic delineators that were installed to prevent people from using the right-turn lane as a passing lane are gone.

MANSFIELD, MA — An effort to decrease speeding on Route 106 near the Easton line did not have the results the police department was hoping for.

Traffic delineators that were installed to prevent people from using the right-turn only lanes on the street as a passing lane were recently removed after being placed on the road in late July.

The plan was implemented before going through an approval process, selectmen Chairman Michael Trowbridge said at Wednesday’s board meeting. By the time the sticks were removed, they were all hit by cars, noted Town Manager Kevin Dumas.

“It goes to show there was an issue,” Dumas said after the meeting.

The short-lived plan had good intentions, but proved to be unpopular, especially on social media.

“I appreciate that the police department went out there to address the concerns. I think the ones who are complaining should realize they were trying to do what was safer for the townspeople,” Trowbridge said.

Dumas said the police department will now conduct targeted patrols of the area to cut down on speeding.
