Updated: A Tour of Old Town House Progress
The $675,000 project is due for completion this fall.
Local officials expect a lot of "oohs and aahs" from residents when they step inside the Old Town House upon completion of interior work this fall.
In the meantime, in the accompanying video, have a glimpse of improvements underway.
On Friday the smell of fresh paint and freshly cut wood circulated in the historic building, built in 1727.Â
Workers from contractor Tom Cooney Construction of South Boston rolled egg-shell-colored paint on main floor walls, set railings on the staircase leading to the upper floor and continued work on the elevator.
Weaving a path among the workers were Town Administrator Jeff Chelgren, Town Planner Becky Curran, Selectman Judy Jacobi and members of the press.
The group got a tour of the progress, and officials were pleased with the work to date.
The $675,000 project, which will make the building accessible to all people, was approved by voters in 2012 after its defeat a year earlier.
Selectman Judy Jacobi looks forward to the building again being a hub of activity.
Home to voting and meetings, yes, but lectures, art shows and concert, as well. Maybe even weddings.
Town officials will continue to look at possible uses for the building.
The construction is expected to be completed by the end of October or beginning of November, the town administrator said.
It's a rewarding experience, seeing the building updated with improvements for the next generation, the town administrator said.
Editor's note: The original edition of this article listed the project's price tag at $450,000; the town administrator informed us that the budget for the project is $675,000.
