Babe Ruth Homers Against Marblehead: On This Date 97 Years Ago

It's the anniversary of the Great Bambino playing at Cooney Field in Beverly.

It's a little weird, isn't it? Babe Ruth and Marblehead, intertwined in history if even for a day.

But there he was, the Great Bambino himself homering at Cooney Field in Beverly as part of an exhibition 2-0 victory against Marblehead. Ruth loved playing offseason exhibitions, playing in a number of games and hitting a number of titanic home runs along the way, in addition to the 714 he hit in the major leagues.

The game, played on Oct. 10, 1919, wasn't long after he had finished his final season with the Red Sox, nor was it long before he was traded to the Yankees.
