Coronavirus Concerns Cancel Marblehead Christmas Tree Burn
The annual town tradition typically is every Jan. 6 and includes a large bonfire of trees disposed curbside.
MARBLEHEAD, MA — The coronavirus health crisis has claimed its first big event of 2021 in Marblehead.
The Marblehead Fire Department announced the annual Christmas tree burn is off this year.
The bonfire event is usually held on the Epiphany — Jan. 6 — each year with a Riverhead beach fire consisting of trees left out for curbside pickup in the town.

While curbside tree disposal will still take place, residents looking to burn their own trees must follow guidelines of the open burning season that begins on Jan. 15.
Burning takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with residents allowed to burn brush, driftwood, bush prunings and forest debris. Residents cannot burn construction debris, grass, leaves, hay, stumps and tires.

All open burning must be 75 feet away from buildings. Residents must have a shovel, rake and reliable water supply nearby.
Residents can call Marblehead Dispatch Center at 781-631-1212 for a burn permit. Burn permits will be issued based on the fire danger and wind for the day.
