Local Girl Spells Her Way Into Bee Semis
Amber Born, of Marblehead, advanced to the semis of the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee Thursday afternoon.

Can you spell sylloge?
After an incredible run, Marblehead's own Amber Born's competitive journey through the English vocabulary ended Thursday afternoon.
Born had advanced to the semifinal round of the SCRIPPS National Spelling Bee Wednesday after correctly spelling cinephile and pizzicato during preliminary rounds.

During Thursday's opening semifinal round, held at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center just outside of Washington, D.C. in Maryland, Born tripped up on the word sylloge, a word of Greek origin defined as a collection or a compendium. Born misspelled the word as "s-y-l-l-o-g-y."
Unlike Wednesday's preliminary rounds, if you misspelled a word today, you were eliminated from competition to the chime of a bell.
