Marblehead Democratic Town Committee Awards 4 Scholarships
The MDTC recognized four worthy Marblehead High graduates as part of its 40th anniversary year.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — The Marblehead Democratic Town Committee marked its 40th anniversary this spring by awarding four scholarships to deserving Marblehead High School graduates.
The MDTC each year presents the Edwin L. and Selma L. Goldberg Scholarship to one or more members of the senior class to "encourage civic engagement, interest in government and participation in the political process.
This year's scholarships were supported through funds raised at the annual MDTC picnic with special donations from Goldberg grandchildren, Nancy Steinberg, Judi Margolin, Adam Margolin and Jessica Margolin Fenton.

This year's three Goldberg Scholarships went to Mae Genovese, Dan Howells and Muriel Owen. The MDTC also awarded a scholarship in memory of beloved teacher, activist and lifetime MDTC member Ann Cohen to Sophie Hauck.
Hauck was a co-chair of Marblehead High School Democrats since 2019 and a very active leader in all groups and activities. Her achievements include conceptualizing, organizing and moderating a virtual panel with State Rep. Lori Ehrlich on the importance of civic engagement.

She was the president of the Marblehead High environmental honor society, was the editor-in-chief of the student Headlight newspaper, the student representative on the Marblehead High Reopening Committee and Green Marblehead Committee. She was also one of two high school students fulfilling the MHS Diversity, Equity & Inclusion audit.
Hauck is headed to the UMass-Amherst Honors College.
Genovese is also a Marblehead High School Democrats co-chair and the group's first social media coordinator. She led the group's election support, fundraising, educational outreach and political activism efforts. She was an intern in Angus McQuilken's campaign for U.S. Congress.
She was also on the varsity swim team, the Magicians' track and field team and played soccer her senior year
A high honors student, she will attend Bucknell University where she plans to study accounting.
Owen was a reporter for the school newspaper and was highly engaged in the Marblehead High School Democrats Club and National Green School Society, as well as the Marblehead High School Interact Club. She was a regional leader in U.S. Sen. Ed Markey's election campaign phone banking and teachers newer volunteers how to campaign.
She spent her junior year in Lucerne, Switzerland as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program.
Owen will attend Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany where she plans to study international business.
Howells was class president all four years at Marblehead High and the student representative on the Marblehead School Committee.
He was also active in a capella and drama, and earned his Eagle Scout in Troop #79.
Howells plans to study music and sound engineering at Rutgers University.
