Marblehead Fourth Of July Fireworks Canceled
The Marblehead Fireworks and Harbor Illumination committee cited potential for an overwhelming crowd as a main reason for the cancellation.
MARBLEHEAD, MA —There will be no municipal fireworks in Marblehead for the second straight Fourth of July.
The Marblehead Fireworks and Harbor Illumination committee said that while the lifting of coronavirus-related restrictions would allow for an event this year, there were concerns that since most other area communities have already canceled their fireworks events having one in Marblehead would bring overflow crowds of visitors to the town.
"As you can imagine, this would most likely have resulted in an extraordinary influx of people into our town on that day, including by land and by sea, and the committee was unanimous in our concern that this would create untenable safety and health hazards for the public," the committee said in posting the announcement.

The committee said it will explore the possibility of an alternate fireworks show later in the summer, but will likely only do so if neighboring communities do the same. In postponing its Fourth of July fireworks show, Salem officials said they will instead plan fireworks for Heritage Days in August.
"We know that this is a very disappointing announcement, but we strongly feel that the concerns for the safety and health of our community expressed by committee members who are trained and experienced public safety professionals warrant this approach," the committee said.
