Marblehead May See Ocean-Effect Snow Band; Overnight Parking Ban

While most of the state is expected to see 3 to 6 inches of snow from the long-duration storm, coastal snow bands could add up to 8 inches.

While school closings are not a concern during February vacation, on-street parking, coronavirus testing, vaccinations appointments and town office openings could be affected in the long-duration storm.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — After being on the lower end of accumulations in recent snowstorms, ocean-effect snows could make the North Shore and other coastal communities the jackpot in a long-duration storm expected to start Thursday afternoon and continue through Friday.

NBC10 Boston meteorologist Aaron Perry told Patch on Thursday that snow bands could develop along the coast and bring the North Shore up to 7 or 8 inches, with a widespread 3 to 6 inches expected across much of the state.

Marblehead called a snow emergency parking ban starting at midnight Thursday night through 7 a.m. Friday morning. Vehicles parked on public streets after midnight will be ticketed and towed.

"Though the snow emergency does not go into effect until midnight, the forecast calls for snow to begin late afternoon," Marblehead Town Administrator Jason Silva said, "so please do all that you can to remove your vehicle from the street as soon as possible, your cooperation will aid the plow drivers and overall snow removal efforts."

Trash and recycling pickup remained unaffected as of Thursday afternoon.

Perry forecast light snow to start North of the Mass Pike late Thursday afternoon with a "low impact" on the evening commute.

"Overnight, ocean-effect snow bands are expected to move onshore across eastern areas as low-level flow turns from the northeast," Perry said.

Snow was forecast to linger throughout the day Friday with some rain possibly mixing in along the Cape and some coastal locations.
