Marblehead Police Warn Residents Of Gun Permit Scam

Marblehead police advise residents not to click on any link in an unsolicited email.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — Marblehead police warned residents of a scam making the rounds where the recipient of an email or text message is sent a link to purportedly download a link to a gun permit application.

"Scammers never take a holiday off," Marblehead police said. "Should you receive a text or email such as this: 'Today, Dec. 25, is the final day you can get a concealed carry gun certificate permit. Download it here in under 15 minutes ...' Do not click on this link, please."

Residents are advised never to give money to someone requesting it on an unsolicited phone call, text message or email.

Beverly and Swampscott police recently warned residents that they received several recent calls from those targeted in the "grandparents" scam in which usually an older person gets a call informing them a younger relative is in trouble and needs money wired immediately to post bail.

In the Swampscott case, the calls appeared to be coming from the Swampscott Police Department business line, even though they were not. Swampscott police said they will never request money for something like bail from residents over the phone.
