Marblehead Receives $67K In Shared Streets And Spaces Funding

MARBLEHEAD, MA — A state program designed to extend a life line to some small businesses amid coronavirus restrictions this fall and onset of winter will send $67,000 to Marblehead to help accomodate outdoor dining on sidewalks and portions of streets in the town.

The award was part of $3.9 million in grants recently awarded statewide in the program that was doubled to $10 million last week. The program provides help to towns looking to expand outdoor business opportunities to help businesses with restricted indoor access and capacity.

Marblehead's award can be used to purchase umbrellas, tents, planters, chairs, tables, jersey barriers and portable ramps for outdoor dining and to reconfigure streets and sidewalks.

"The Shared Streets and Spaces Emergency Grant Program has helped communities recover economically," Gov. Charlie Baker said at a news conference last week, "and we are pleased that these grants can support businesses and invest in ways to create more space and follow safety guidance during the pandemic."

The grant will also go toward flashing safety beacons, new pedestrian-oriented signage, pedestrian-activated buttons and disability act-compliant ramps near the multi-use rail trail and middle school.

"It's important to continue to support local businesses, restaurants and all retailers who make up the fabric of our communities."
