Seals Aren't 'Stranded,' They're Sunning: Marblehead Police

With spring approaching, Marblehead Police issued a reminder about a semi-aquatic species and their sunning habits.

MARBLEHEAD, MA – If you see a seal on the beach, it's probably not in trouble. According to the New England Aquarium Rescue Program, seals are semi-aquatic and belong on the beach.

Marblehead Police issued a similar reminder earlier this month after a big-eyed visitor spent some time on land at an undisclosed location.

"No need to panic about seals 'stranded' because in reality they're not," read the post. It asked that if residents do see a seal, to call 781-631-1212, so the police can inform the right people, and the Animal Control Officer can put up a sign reminding people to leave the seal alone.

The New England Aquarium said that most seals on the beach are fine, but some do need help from humans. If the seal has obvious injuries, gunky eyes, or looks underweight, call Marblehead Police.

According to the Marblehead Police post, it's illegal to touch seals, play with them, or get too close.
