2020 Election: Marlborough Sets New Voting Records

MARLBOROUGH, MA — Marlborough voters set new records in the 2020 election compared to other recent presidential elections, including the widest margin between Democrat and Republican votes dating back to 2004, according to ballot data.
A total of 78.78 percent of Marlborough's 24,435 registered voters cast a ballot in the 2020 presidential election, the third-highest share dating back to the race between John Kerry and George W. Bush in 2004.
The 2008 election between Barack Obama and John McCain still holds the turnout record in Marlborough at over 80 percent.

Also in 2020, Marlborough set a record over the past five elections for the biggest share of votes cast for a Democratic presidential candidate — and the smallest share for a Republican. Between 2016 and 2020, the GOP share of votes for president shrunk from 32.5 percent to just over 30 percent, according to turnout data.
Also in 2020, the share of votes cast for a Democrat was above 60 percent for the first time since the turn of the century. The high mark for Marlborough residents picking a Republican candidate was in 2004 at nearly 41 percent.
