MARLBOROUGH, MA — Marlborough may have a third cannabis retail business opening soon.

A new adult-use retailer, partially backed by two Marlborough developers, is asking for approval from the City Council to open in a space at 910 Boston Post Road. Local Roots NE is partially backed by Keystone Development Corporation co-founders Michael Staiti and Rick Olstein, but was founded in 2016 by Dean Iandoli and Catherine Trifilo.

Marlborough's first cannabis retailer, Garden Remedies, opened last June. This winter, Vedi Naturals asked the City Council for approval to open a retail store at 416 Boston Post Road. A public hearing for the store is scheduled for Aug. 25.

According to documents submitted to City Council, Local Roots NE would operate a 1,885 square-foot space with 25 parking spots. The location would be in a mostly industrial area across the street from Hager Pond.

Iandoli and Trifilo ventured into the marijuana industry in 2016, creating The Caregiver-Patient Connection to treat their son's Tourette's syndrome. Local Roots operates dispensaries in Fitchburg and Sturbridge, and has a growing facility in Framingham.

Both Local Roots NE and Vedi Naturals need approval from the state Cannabis Control Commission before opening, in addition to a special zoning exemption from Marlborough to operate in the Wayside district.
