Aquinnah Woman Dies in Snowstorm

Amanda Hutchinson of Aquinnah died after leaving her home during Saturday's snowstorm and never returning.

As the first snowstorm blanketed the Island with up to nine inches of snow, Aquinnah resident Amanda Hutchinson left her house to check on a property that she caretakes and did not return.

The Vineyard Gazette reported, “Authorities believe the victim, Amanda Hutchinson, died of exposure to cold.”

Aquinnah Police Sgt. Paul Manning told the Gazette that the police received a call from Mrs. Hutchinson’s husband, Steve Hutchinson, at 8:30 a.m. Sunday to report he had found his wife in the snow on Old Lantern Way, located off Old South Road.

The Gazette reported that, “She was unconscious when Mr. Hutchinson found her and pronounced dead at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital at 10:12 am.”

Hutchinson was the administrative assistant to the Aquinnah board of health and assistant to the planning board. She was 50 years old.

At press time no one from the Aquinnah police department was available for comment.
