Boys' and Girls' Basketball Head to Semifinals

In one of the most exciting high school sports weeks in recent history, both the boys’ and the girls’ varsity basketball teams advanced to the semifinals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.

On Thursday, the Vineyard girls beat East Bridgewater 52-34 in a home game in front of a large crowd despite the fact that it was February break.

According to the Martha’s Vineyard Times, “The Vineyarders used a 12-4 run late in the second period to take a 23-20 lead at the half and then put the game away by outscoring the Vikings 17-2 in the third period.”

Jennie Lindland, led the Vineyarders with 16 points.

The girls now advance to the semifinals against Fairhaven who beat Norwell 55-44 on Thursday night.

And it was a strong combination of offense and defense that allowed the boys’ basketball team to bring home the win over rival team Bishop Feehan on Friday.

The Martha’s Vineyard Times reported that by the third quarter, "The defense stole the ball and harried the Feehan ballhandlers and passers, causing several turnovers. By the end of the quarter, the Vineyard had pulled out to a 47-31 lead."

The final score was 71-53 and Peter Keaney led with 21 points.

The semifinal match up will put the second seeded Vineyarders against the winner of the Norwell vs. Westwood game scheduled for 6 pm on Saturday.
