Cape Cod Seal Pup Rescued From Highway

A Cape Cod seal pup somehow made it a mile from shore onto a busy highway.

YARMOUTH, MA — A Cape Cod seal pup had quite the holiday adventure Friday. Drivers on the busy Route 6A highway in Yarmouth spotted the young seal waddling across the highway — which is roughly a mile from the beach. Animal rescuers were called to the scene and scooped the seal up and away out of danger.

"How he got so far inland from the ocean to Route 6A without getting hurt is amazing," Yarmouth police said in a statement. There are some inland waterways but most of the seal's journey was likely made over ground.

Beside a bloody nail on its flipper, the seal appeared to be OK. It was placed in the care of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, where it will be rehabilitated then released back into Cape Cod waters.
