Coronavirus: Island Police To Wear Protective Masks
Island towns police are letting residents know they will have a different look while responding on the island during the coronavirus crisis.
MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA — Island police departments want residents not to be caught off guard when they see police donning a different look over at least the next few weeks. Police will be wearing protective masks to help officers stay healthy, stay on the job and mitigate the community spread of the virus.
Martha's Vineyard Hospital announced that as of Saturday there were 11 positive tests for COVID-19 on the island. There have been 112 negative tests, and 11 pending tests. As of Saturday, there were no hospitalized patients with COVID-19 on the island, with two previous confirmed cases being transported to Boston. Nantucket has reported one coronavirus-related death.
"If you see officers wearing a mask don't be alarmed," Edgartown police posted on social media. "We are doing this for your health and ours. We promise our friendly neighborhood officer is still smiling beneath that mask."
