EDGARTOWN, MA — A dog whose owner was accused of abusing him on Saturday was reported missing in Edgartown on Monday after being placed with a third party.

Edgartown police said Max's owner was charged with abusing the dog after the Martha's Vineyard Times reported witnesses said the Rhode Island man "continuously kicked the dog in the side."

Police said an officer saw the man roughly yanking the dog's leash on Upper Main Street and that it appeared the dog was deprived of water on a very hot day.

Edgartown police said the Animal Control League placed Max with a foster owner after an examination, but Max missing as of Monday.

Anyone spotting Max on the island is asked to call the communication center at 508-693-1212 or Edgartown police at 508-627-4343.

The Martha's Vineyard Times reported Jay Michael Linhares was charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct. He pleaded not guilty, and was released on his personal recognizance.

The Australian cattle dog is licensed in Tiverton, RI.
