Everything is Right Where it Should Be at Fiddlehead Farm

The Up-Island gourmet grocer has opened for the season

Bob Skydell, owner of , will tell you - he’s one of the few people in retail who really likes his customers. And whether or not it is due to his sense of customer service, or his own sense of comfort, the fact that on opening day, everything is right where it should be at Fiddlehead Farm is as much of a service as anything.

Skydell is looking forward to his fifth season at the old Farmer Green’s in West Tisbury. He’s hoping to have a bigger, more successful garden than last year’s.

“I’m especially looking forward to seeing all the familiar faces,” he said.

The feeling is mutual to be sure.

“Oh thank God you are finally open,” says a customer as she walks through the door. Turning to me she says, “There’s nothing like their meat selection” and selects a gorgeous rack of lamb.

There are pastas from Italy and olive oil I can only dream of affording - all right where I remember them from last year - on weatherworn shelves, in deep baskets on antique tables.

On the way out the door, that same customer taps me on the shoulder, “Don’t forget to mention the cheeses,” she said. To be sure, the cheeses are there too – goat cheeses, soft cheeses, cheeses with thick, stinky-good green rinds.

Today, it is enough to admire the strawberries and pour myself a cup of coffee. I’ll come back soon for another indulgence. A pint of Ciao Bella ice cream or perhaps some Grey Barn Farm milk. After all, summer has just begun.
