Great White Shark Eats Seal Off Cape Cod In Video

Researchers off Cape Cod captured up-close video of a great white shark eating a seal near Chatham.

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA — Researchers over the weekend captured up-close video of a great white shark eating a seal off Cape Cod. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy on Monday posted video (below) of the gruesome attack, including overhead shots (Warning: video is graphic and includes music.). The predation happened near Chatham.

Cape Cod is a hot spot for sharks, which are drawn in by the dense seal population during the summer months. Most sharks still around Cape Cod will soon head south to Florida for the winter. Great whites nurse off Montauk, New York, and travel to the Cape every summer to hunt, according to researchers. Great whites are most active off the Cape in late July and early August. There were no incidents involving sharks attacking people on the Cape this summer; however, a great white was recently caught chomping a researcher's underwater GoPro.

Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare; the odds are about one in 12 million. Most shark attack victims survive, as bites on humans by sharks are normally exploratory.
