UPDATE: Martha's Vineyard Holds Onto Island Cup

Martha's Vineyard beats Nantucket by 1 point. Vineyard turns the game around with last minute play and wins 27 to 26.

Update: The Vineyard came from behind in a last minute touchdown this afternoon and beat Nantucket 27 to 26. The Island Cup remains on the Vineyard for another year.

 

This Saturday, Nov. 17,  one of the Island’s oldest traditions takes place: The  Island Cup. The annual Martha’s Vineyard-Nantucket football game will be played this year at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s Dan McCarthy Field in front of over 3,000 fans. Junior Varsity game starts at 10am; Varsity kickoff at 1pm.

Called “one of the most passionate rivalries in the New England region,” by the Boston Herald, the game is one of 72 matchups selected for the Marine-sponsored 2012 Great American Rivalry Series that highlights the best high school football rivalries in the nation. While Nantucket leads the series, which dates back to 1953, 35-26-3, the Vineyard has held the Island Cup trophy since 2002. .

According to the Herald, a United States Marine will present the winning team with the Great American Rivalry Series Champion trophy. “The game’s Most Valuable Player is also named by media in attendance, and the Series awards the top student-athlete from each school a college scholarship.”

The 34th Island Cup will be played on Saturday, November 17 at 1 pm at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School’s Dan McCarthy Memorial Field.
