John Mayhew, Island Elder and Fisherman Passes Away
The Island fishermen, World War II vet, high school teacher and beloved husband and father died this morning.
The Vineyard Gazette reported today that John Mayhew, "departed in the early morning hours, around the time he would rise to get out on the water to go fishing in an earlier time, and his family imagines that is where he has gone. He was 91 years old. A full obituary will follow soon, and a communitywide memorial service will be planned for later in the year."
He leaves behind his family including his wife, writer Shirley Mayhew.
