This Is The Most Beautiful Place In Massachusetts

AQUINNAH, MA — Spring and summer are times for appreciating the Bay State's natural, historic beauty. The bad news for most Massachusetts residents: You can't drive to the most beautiful spot in the state.

This month, Conde Nast Traveler named the most beautiful place in every U.S. state. Massachusetts is full of beautiful vacation destinations, but there was one location that stood out to them: Gay Head Light and the Aquinnah Cliffs.

Located in the westernmost part of Martha's Vineyard, the Cliffs are home to the famous Gay Head Light.

"Approaching the cliffs almost feels like you’re reaching the end of the world," the Martha's Vineyard tourism website says.

Gay Head Light is near the first lighthouse in Martha's Vineyard, constructed in 1799. The original was moved back a several dozen feet in 1844. The one that currently stands was constructed in 1856. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The schedule for Gay Head Light this year is:

• From Memorial Day weekend to June 23, open on the weekends, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (On Memorial Day weekend, the lighthouse will be open Sat, Sun and Mon.)
• June 24 thru Labor Day weekend, open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

For anyone hoping to visit this summer, you best get over your fear over flying and boating, as there is no direct connection between the Massachusetts mainland and Martha's Vineyard. You can take a ferry, though those have been dogged by breakdowns this year. You could also fly Cape Air, though that's certainly not cheap.

"No state is the same, and each has its stars, the kind of sights that make you catch your breath and nearly veer off the highway," Conde Nast writes. The magazine writes that the list "only scrapes the surface" of what the U.S. has to offer, so consider it as a starting point.
