OAK BLUFFS, MA — Another favorite summer Vineyard tradition has been canceled due to the new coronavirus. The Oak Bluffs Fire Department will not hold its annual end-of-summer fireworks spectacular, the fire department announced Wednesday night.

"The Oak Bluffs Firemen’s Civic Association has made the difficult decision to cancel the annual August fireworks display this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic," the department said in a statement.

The decision comes in the wake of the cancellation of the 159th Agricultural Fair, another popular summer event on the island.

As of now, the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association has yet to make a decision about Grand Illumination, which is always held the Wednesday before Friday night fireworks. With tens of thousands crowding into the campground each year for the event, its future remains uncertain in a time when large crowds are severely limited to prevent the spread of the virus.
