Search For Missing Dog 'Max' Extends Beyond Martha's Vineyard

EDGARTOWN, MA — Edgartown police said on Friday a dog that went missing on Martha's Vineyard Monday, after his owner was accused of abuse, is no longer believed to be on the island.

"Rest assured that we will continue to actively work with our law enforcement and animal welfare partners until we can ensure Max's safety," Edgartown police said.

The Australian Cattle dog, whose owner was accused of abusing him on Saturday, was reported missing in Edgartown on Monday after being placed with a third party. Edgartown police said Max's owner was charged with abusing the dog after the Martha's Vineyard Times reported witnesses said the Rhode Island man "continuously kicked the dog in the side."

Police said an officer saw the Rhode Island man roughly yanking the dog's leash on Upper Main Street, and that it appeared the dog was deprived of water on a very hot day.

Edgartown police said the Animal Control League placed Max with a foster owner after a examination, but Max missing as of Monday and remained missing on Friday.

Anyone spotting Max on the island is asked to call the communication center at 508-693-1212 or Edgartown police at 508-627-4343.

"Our search for Max continues, however, we believe he is no longer on the island," Edgartown police said on Friday. "Thank you all for your concern and continued support with this difficult matter."
