MARTHA'S VINEYARD, MA — The Steamship Authority says ferry service is safe but may be delayed after it was the victim of a cyberattack Wednesday morning.

The Authority, which ferries people from the Cape to the islands, said it is working with federal and local authorities to figure out the scope and origin of the attack.

Right now it appears the company's website is down and booking is delayed.

The ransomware attack comes as temperatures begin to heat up in Massachusetts. A heat wave is expected to start this weekend, meaning there could be extra demand to get away to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.

These types of cyberattacks can cripple operations. The Registry of Motor Vehicles couldn't inspect vehicles for weeks after a malware attack in March.
