Tagged Great White Shark 'Martha' Is Heading To Martha's Vineyard
The great white shark was swimming in Rhode Island waters Tuesday morning, but now Martha is heading near her namesake, Martha's Vineyard.
MARTHA's VINEYARD, MA —A tagged female great white shark named Martha is heading towards Martha's Vineyard.
According to OCEARCH's website, Martha latest 'ping' was Tuesday night, after passing by Rhode Island shores that morning.
A "ping" occurs when the shark's dorsal fin is above the surface long enough for a satellite to pick up its location on the tag placed on the fin so that researchers are able to follow the patterns of the shark.

The shark at 7 feet, 184 pounds is still a juvenile who was tagged by OCEARCH, a nonprofit research group, on August 13, 2020 while she was on the coast of Cape Cod.
Martha was named after Martha's Vineyard, according to OCEARCH's profile of her.

Martha was the fourth great white shark tagged by OCEARCH on its summer expedition to Massachusetts, according to their website.
