Going for the 2050 Net Zero Goal

Medfield Environment Action and the Medfield Energy Committee are hosting an educational, community forum on Monday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The forum will be an opportunity for residents to learn about a Warrant Article that the Medfield Energy Committee is bringing forward to be voted on at Town Meeting in May. Residents will be asked to vote on a Climate Goal for Medfield of reaching Net Zero by 2050 or sooner. This Warrant Article will affirm the Massachusetts State Net Zero 2050 Goal. Included in the Warrant Article is development of an evolving plan or roadmap for how the town, its residents, and businesses, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change leading to net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

Denise Garlick, member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, will attend the zoom to discuss the State’s Climate Goal of Net Zero by 2050 and to answer questions.

Climate change is manifested by rising global temperatures, rising sea level and ocean acidity, increased flooding with more intense and frequent storms, drought, forest fires and other unpredictable weather patterns and increased health risks. All of these are due to greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere. Medfield Environment Action conducted a survey in the fall of 2020 and 77% of the over 500 respondents felt that the climate crisis poses a serious threat for people around the world. 72% supported Medfield adopting climate goals and developing a plan to help reach that goal. If adopted, Medfield would join 15 other communities who have climate goals such as Wellesley, Natick, Wayland, Newton. A goal and plan for Medfield will provide direction to reduce the town’s carbon footprint. In addition, a goal will be a means of measuring progress and accountability.
