Medfield Awarded Grant To Support Recycling, Reduce Waste

Medfield was awarded $6,000 in a Sustainable Materials Recovery Program grant.

MEDFIELD, MA — Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday announced his administration had awarded $3.2 million to municipalities across the commonwealth to support sustainable waste programs.

Among the recipients was Medfield, which received a $6,000 Recycling Dividends Program grant to help ramp up recycling programs and reduce waste.

"Some of the most important environmental protection work happens every day in communities throughout Massachusetts through local recycling and solid waste programs," Baker said in a statement. "With this assistance, we are ensuring that local officials, residents and small business owners can continue protecting the Commonwealth's neighborhoods and natural resources."

All told, the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program sent payments to 269 municipalities across the state. Recipients of SMRP grants are required to reinvest the money into recycling programs.

The funding can be used to buy new recycling bins, fund outreach and public education campaigns and collect hard-to-recycle items.

"These new funds give communities the opportunity to make critical investments in their recycling programs, capturing more materials that can be reused, and helping them to reduce their waste disposal costs," Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Martin Suuberg said in a statement. "This is another example of MassDEP's commitment to building strategic partnerships with our local communities."
