Medfield Can't Figure Out Hacker, Pays $300 Ransom

Hackers installed a virus that locked up Medfield’s municipal computer network for about a week, and the town eventually paid a $300 ransom to get its system back.

Medfield was a victim of “ransomware”, according to a statement from Town Administrator Michael J. Sullivan.

Ransomware is a type of cyberattack that locks files until a ransom is paid out. That is exactly what Medfield had to do after failed attempts to recover the information.

Town officials say no data was compromised and that steps will be taken to strengthen the system.
