Medfield High School Football Returns, Honoring A Legend
2020-2021 MHS Varsity football team dedicates their season to the memory of Mr. Phil Burr, Medfield High School class of 1947.
2020-2021 MHS Football Team Honors Burr
On Saturday afternoon, March 20, 2021, the Medfield HS Varsity football team played their first game since Thanksgiving of 2019 and honored the late Phil Burr who was a Korean War Veteran and long-time Medfield resident. The team is dedicating their season in his honor and their helmets are adorned with a sticker honoring him. The sticker has Burr's initials PJB above a Navy Cross. Varsity football coach, Erik Ormberg penned the following introduction to the game which was delivered by fellow coach, Mike Mason.
"In March of 2020 Medfield lost a true American hero, and native son, when Phil Burr passed away at the age of 90. Phil graduated from Medfield High School in 1947. Mr. Burr was a marine…..a teacher…..a coach and a close friend to all members of the Medfield football program and the greater Medfield community. While enlisted Mr. Burr, a Korean War Veteran, earned both the Navy Cross for EXTRAORDINARY HEROISM and a Purple Heart. His plaque is one of only 22 on the Medfield Alumni Wall of Fame.

Mr. Burr addressed the football team in 2014 prior to their first game. In 2018 the first annual PHIL BURR SENIOR COFFEE was added as an event during senior week--an event Phil was able to attend in May of 2019. When Phil addressed seniors that year he emphasized one thing--the value and importance of community. Mr. Burr represents the best parts of this town and our country.
Today, Medfield Football takes the field against Norwood for the first football game since Thanksgiving of 2019. Nearly 475 days have passed since the team has gathered together in a competition like the one we will witness today. It is with profound honor…..deep admiration and unwavering respect that the 2020-2021 Medfield Football Team dedicates their season to the memory of Mr. Phil Burr, Medfield High School class of 1947.
